Arrests up 43 percent over holiday weekend

Fewer calls for service this year, but 40 percent more crime reports taken during the Fourth of July weekend from previous years.

Arrests for public intoxication, narcotics, weapons and driving under the influence highlighted the bulk of the bookings over the July 4 weekend, during which the Hollister Independence Rally was held.

Calls for service were down 15 percent, according to a report from Hollister Police Chief David Westrick, but there were 40 percent more crime reports taken and a 43 percent increase in arrests over the weekend when compared to 2015.

For the second year in a row, according to a press release from Westrick, no crimes, incidents, events were reported after midnight in the rally event area throughout the weekend.

The Hollister Police Department responded to 753 calls for service over the three days of the rally. By comparison, HPD responded to 891 calls for service during the 2015 rally and 420 calls during the 2014 rally.
