A group of San Benito High School spots medicine students placed in the top 10 in a weekend competition that qualifies the team for the AACI National Sports Medicine Competition in the large school division.

SBHS athletic trainer and sports medicine teacher Danielle Cote and senior class advisor Mike Schurig took the 15-student contingent to the 16th Annual High School Sports Medicine Competition this past weekend in La Canada, Calif. The students took a 100-question multiple choice/matching/true-false exam and a practical exam. The practical exam had four components; taping, first aid/CPR/AED, palpation of the foot, ankle and lower leg, and special tests of the foot, ankle and lower leg.

The top 10 teams from each division (small school division and large school) qualify for the nationals.

“I am happy to announce that we placed ninth in the large school division,” Cote said, noting that her students will begin preparing for the national exam which consists of 300 questions about first aid and CPR, emergency procedures, medical terminology, body planes and directions, appropriate legal Issues terminology, physiology and anatomy/evaluation techniques for the foot, ankle and lower leg.
