SUMMARY:The Future We Speak ~ CalPoets' Symposium 2025
DESCRIPTION:For 61 years\, California Poets in the Schools (CalPoets) has brought poetry creation and performance to over a million students across the state\, and provided a vital professional network for thousands of California poets. \nThis symposium is open to the public and geared towards literary teaching artists (for all audiences)\, classroom educators\, poets\, MFA candidates\, and more. Content will be engaging for those brand new to teaching the literary arts and to the “old hats” among us. CalPoets’ Poet-Teachers will lead workshops sharing their skills and expertise. \nWorkshops will be geared towards the theme of THE FUTURE WE SPEAK. How can poetry serve as a tool for speaking out and speaking up? Can our connection to poetry help build the future we want to see? How do we encourage California youth to unplug\, find their unique voices\, speak out against injustices\, and thrive? What role does poetry hold in the current political climate? How does raising our individual voice encourage others to do the same? We will learn from experts in our midst and pool our best practices for a weekend of learning\, networking\, community-building\, poetry readings\, and some good old-fashioned fun.

SUMMARY:Kim Addonizio Poetry Craft Workshop & Reading
DESCRIPTION:11:30am-1pm: Craft Workshop: Risking Delight: Kim Addonizio: This craft and generative workshop will be about joy\, an emotion that’s difficult to access these days given the state of our country and the world. But as Jack Gilbert wrote\, If we deny our happiness\, resist our satisfaction\,/we lessen the importance of their deprivation./ We must risk delight. In this workshop\, we’ll look at some poems that do just that\, and muster some writing of our own to counteract the negative forces around us that insists on pain\, destruction\, and despair. \nPoetry Reading: \n2:00pm-3:15pm Kim Addonizio’s most recent poetry collection is Exit Opera (W.W.Norton\, 2024). She is the author of eight other poetry collections\, two novels\, two story collections\, and two books on writing poetry\, The Poet’s Companion (with Dorianne Laux) and Ordinary Genius\, as well as a memoir-in-essays\, Bukowski in a Sundress: Confessions from a Writing Life. Addonizio’s work has been honored with fellowships from the NEA and Guggenheim Foundation\, and her collection Tell Me was a finalist for the National Book Award. She lives in Oakland\, CA and teaches writing workshops on Zoom. https://www.kimaddonizio.com
