SUMMARY:Presentation about Dr. Frederick H. Matteson and Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:When Dr. Frederick H. Matteson passed away\, he left his estate to the Community Foundation for San Benito County to help improve the lives of people in our community with dimentia and other intellectul difficulties. \nThis special presentation will include details about Fred’s life and provide an opportunity to purchase the book\, “Time Well Spent\,” a biography about Fred written by Sharlene Van Rooy. \nA TRUE RENAISSANCE MAN WHO SOARED THROUGH LIFE WITH GRACE \nFred H. Matteson was destined to be involved with aviation from the day he was born. As an Aeronautical Engineer\, he dreamed of someday designing his own glider\, but he was also grounded by his love of the bicycle. Fred traveled the world to witness his contemporaries achieve lofty goals and to see places he only read about in books. His life experiences were intertwined with his passion for art and music\, capturing his love of flying among the cumulus clouds in a composition titled\, “Soaring.” \n“Time Well Spent” is a collection of personal narratives–letters Fred wrote to his folks and articles published in “Soaring”–interwoven with life-long friendships and significant milestones. \nSharlene Van Rooy lives in Hollister\, CA and is a member of the San Benito County Historical Society. This is her first book\, a project driven by her zeal for local history and her desire to share Fred’s life story and the legacy he gave to the community.

SUMMARY:Soil Restoration: The Foundation for Human and Planetary Health
DESCRIPTION:Out-of-control wildfires\, prolonged drought\, severe water shortages\, and intense heat waves across the globe: the worsening effects of climate change are affecting human and environmental health and accelerate our need to act now. It would be easy to become disheartened and to point fingers at agriculture as one of the major contributors to global warming — was it not for a growing cadre of innovative farmers and ranchers that are restoring working lands to drawdown atmospheric carbon\, efficiently recycle nitrogen\, and increase water storing capacity. \nMany in this forward-thinking group are women\, who care deeply about our soil and excel at nurturing it. In what is promising to be yet another compelling prelude to the EcoFarm Conference\, we’re teaming up with Paicines Ranch to introduce you to some of the remarkable female farmers\, ranchers\, scientists\, physicians and advocates at the core of the regenerative movement. \nIronically\, while there is too much carbon in the atmosphere\, agricultural soils the world over are carbon deficient and nutrient depleted\, resulting in increased health issues and food insecurity! Not only is restoring our soils to sequester atmospheric carbon the single most viable pathway to reversing global warming\, but increased fungal and microbial biodiversity in the soil also translates into myriad co-benefits for human health. \nWalking the fields of magnificent Paicines Ranch\, attendees will get to witness several innovative applications of regenerative practices\, from integrating livestock and grains into perennial cropping systems\, to holistic grazing. A scrumptious lunch will be served by local chefs\, and after a tour of Paicines Ranch’s polyculture vineyard\, we’ll end with a complimentary wine tasting in the event barn! \n* All are welcome — if you identify as female\, a farmer/rancher or otherwise! Whether you participated in the inaugural 2018 Regenerative Agriculture Field Day or are new to the movement\, we invite you to come share your questions\, successes or failures\, and find community. \nSponsored by EcoFarm and Paicines Ranch

SUMMARY:From Scotland to San Benito County
DESCRIPTION:Volunteering at the San Benito County Historical Society is interesting—I did not grow up in San Benito County\, and I will never be considered a local by those who have\, but I am always learning something new\, and I feel like I have lived here all my life. Oh but wait\, I am related to Colonel Hollister\, a recent discovery I made while researching information for an upcoming presentation about the Anderson family. \nThe San Benito County Historical Society would like to invite you to our Quarterly Membership Meeting on Wednesday\, September 26th at 7:00 pm\, 498 Fifth Street\, Hollister. We will present a program about the Anderson family\, “From Scotland to San Benito County” including a 30-minute video on how they arrived in California followed by a 30-minute slide presentation with quotes from the actual stories written many years ago. \nA donation of six boxes full of documentation\, photographs\, and artifacts (more than 500 individual records) have painted a colorful picture of the Anderson family\, thanks in part to the writings of two people. After hours of additional research to fill in the gaps\, we have come up with a more complete picture of a local landmark—hopefully shining a spotlight on this long-forgotten place. \nSeating is limited to 35 people\, and admission for members of the Historical Society is free. The public is invited to attend at just $5 per person. \nMy memories of San Benito County are from photographs\, newspapers\, and information I have learned while volunteering at the Wapple House Museum. Research is a passion and sharing stories like this is what the Historical Society is all about. We hope to promote an interest in and appreciation of the County's past\, by providing this opportunity to attend an educational program. You won’t be disappointed.
