DESCRIPTION:UC Master Gardeners know a great garden when they see one. So each year\, they raise funds for their educational programs by presenting a tour of outstanding gardens somewhere in the Monterey Bay area. This year the UC Master Gardener tour will be held in Santa Cruz\, on Saturday\, September 9\, 2017\, and will highlight eight unique gardens that are "waterwise and wildlife friendly." \nAll within an easy day's drive in the City of Santa Cruz\, these gardens will demonstrate how any gardener can reduce their water use while still creating spectacular\, healthy\, and useable spaces for their families. You will see Mediterranean and native plants\, water saving gardening techniques\, and habitats that provide safe havens for the pollinators we need and small mammals that share our suburban spaces. \nBesides the gardens\, you won't want to miss the Garden Tour Headquarters at the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History to enjoy: \na plant sale\, with more than 500 plants propagated by UC Master Gardeners\, and \nfree presentations on gardening "waterwise and wildlife friendly" including: \n"Bringing Nature Back to Tyrrell Park" by Nancy Lenz \nLearn how a handful of neighbors teamed up with the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History and city's Parks and Recreation Department to transform a creekside jungle of invasives into a pollinator and California native plant haven. \n"Creating Wildlife Friendly Garden" by Tai Moses \nLocal author\, Tai Moses\, is at the vanguard of the movement to protect native wildlife in our communities and has lots of recommendations for making your garden a safe habitat for our wild neighbors. \nTickets are $25 in advance ($30\, the day of the tour) and are available on the UC Master Gardeners website – www.mgmb.ucanr.edu – or at participating nurseries listed on the website. \nAbout UC Master Gardeners of Monterey Bay: \nUC Master Gardeners of Monterey Bay is a volunteer organization affiliated with UC Cooperative Extension's Master Gardener Program. SUMMARY:How to Make a Keyhold Garden
DESCRIPTION:UC Master Gardeners of Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties will present a FREE class on August 26 on How to Make a Keyhole Garden. Come learn this new technique for creating a raised garden bed with a compost bin built-in! \nKeyhole gardens are circular raised beds in which crops are planted around an active composting basket in the center. A small aisle is built into the structure to access the compost basket\, creating a unique "keyhole" shape. Kitchen scraps and grey water are added to the compost basket for continuous replenishment of the soil. The soil in the bed is also layered to boost its ability to maintain moisture and nourishment. \nTaught by our popular composting instructor\, UC Master Gardener Otis Johnson\, the class will be held from 10 am to noon at the MG Demonstration Garden next to the rear parking lot at 1430 Freedom Blvd in Watsonville. To register\, please visit mbmg.org. \nThe UC Master Gardeners also invite you to their "Hands on With Master Gardeners" public days at the Watsonville Demonstration Garden every Wednesday morning and every third Saturday of the month through the fall. Drop by any time between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. You are welcome to bring plant samples and questions as well.
