SUMMARY:Volunteer with the Amah Mutsun Land Trust!
DESCRIPTION:Join the Amah Mutsun Land Trust for a day tending the Mutsun gardens at San Juan Bautista State Park on Sunday\, June 25th from 10:30 to 2:30. The Mutsun gardens were designed by the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band as educational tools that demonstrate native plants used as food\, medicine\, and materials for the Mutsun people\, and serve as a visual reminder that the Amah Mutsun are still here and continue to value and maintain their ethnobotanical traditions. The gardens are also a material source for tribal members who wish to harvest and use culturally significant plants. \nVolunteers play a huge role every month in helping the Mutsun gardens thrive\, and the Amah Mutsun Land Trust and Amah Mutsun Tribal Band are grateful for your support. \nNo experience is necessary to join us. Gloves and tools are provided but feel free to bring your own gloves or small garden tools if you have them. You should also bring the food and water you will need for the day\, and wear clothing that will keep you comfortable outdoors and that you don’t mind getting dirty. \nIf you would like to attend or would like some additional information about the event\, please send inquiries or RSVP by emailing Jay Scherf at jscherf@amahmutsun.org. \nIf you would like to learn more about the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band\, or the Amah Mutsun Land Trust\, feel free to visit our website at http://amahmutsun.org/ \nThanks!\n-Amah Mutsun Land Trust Team

SUMMARY:Local Food Economy Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Farmers\, ranchers\, food business owners\, educators\, artists\, and interested community members are invited to join us on Sunday\, March 5th from 4:00 – 6:00 pm at the FarmHouse Cafe\, for a discussion about how we can strengthen our local food economy and connect people of all ages to the bounty of San Benito County agriculture.  \nThis gathering was inspired by a December presentation at Paicines Ranch where Martin Ping of the Hawthorne Valley Association shared how their agricultural community built a thriving Food Hub serving the New York City Metropolitan area (more info here: https://benitolinkcom.wpengine.com/growing-connection-land).  Many of those who attended voiced the desire to continue a conversation about building a more vibrant community food hub right here in San Benito County.  We welcome your participation and input. Please share this invitation with anyone else you think is willing to roll up their sleeves and dive into this exciting topic.  \nPlease RSVP to sanbenitobountyca@slowfoodusa.org.  Beverages will be available for sale\, but the Cafe will be closed for food service. \nWe look forward to seeing you at this gathering to promote the Bounty of our County!

SUMMARY:Pinnacles Martin Luther King Jr. Day Service Event
DESCRIPTION:“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. \nDesignated as a federal holiday in 1938 MLK Jr. Day celebrates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. This day honors his legacy by being the only federal holiday recognized as a national day of service that encourages citizens to be empowered and get involved with their communities. \nJoin Pinnacles as we make it a day on and not a day off with a service project in the park on January 16th.  The service project will start at 9 am this Monday. Meet at the East Entrance Visitor Center at 8:30 am for registration.  To reflect Dr. King’s love for community\, Pinnacles Partnership is partnering with the San Benito Community Food Bank for the event. There will be a donation bin for canned goods at the registration table. Volunteers are encouraged to bring nonperishable items to donate. \nThe service project will be three hours long wrapping up at noon. Come prepared with sturdy shoes\, a water bottle and a great attitude. All tools and necessary personal protection equipment will be provided by the park as well as water. Service projects are family friendly. All are welcome! \nGroups over 15 please register. Children under 18 need a parental release form signed. \nFor more information please contact the Volunteer Office by email at pinn_volunteer@nps.gov or by phone at 831-389-4486 ext. 243.

Our mission is to provide warm winter jackets and shoes for up to 375 deserving children in San Benito County who have been identified by their teachers. \nThis year our shopping trip is on November 5\, 2016. Each child is accompanied by a volunteer who is 18 years or older. Each volunteer is provided an envelope with up to $100.00 to spend\, primarily on shoes and a warm jacket. With our goal of up to 375 children\, a minimum of 400 volunteers are needed on the day of the event. The volunteers must sign up in advance and their names\, addresses\, and driver’s license numbers are compared to the Megan’s Law list. Thumbprints and photos of all volunteers are taken on the day of the event. We are asking the people of our community\, businesses\, churches and organizations for help. Please check out our website for more information and to download a volunteer form. We could really use your help!

SUMMARY:ARRL Field Day - San Benito / Morgan Hill / Gilroy
DESCRIPTION:See: https://benitolinkcom.wpengine.com/san-benito-county-hams-help-national-field-day \nHave you ever wondered how you could call for help if cell service and the internet were down?  How did people make emergency calls without power before cell phones were invented?  \nOne way people were able to call for help was using amateur radios on special frequencies set aside for that purpose. Amateur radio – sometimes called ham radio – has been around for over 100 years\, yet it is still vital in today’s electronic do-it-yourself environment. Operators learn about electronics\, physics\, meteorology and other scientific disciplines while learning to use radios and set up antennas. \nThis year's American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Field Day is June 25-26\, although\, locally we're only having this event on Saturday June 25th.. It is a nationwide event that encourages amateur radio operators to take their radios\, antennas and batteries to public places and set up temporary stations to showcase the science and skill of Amateur Radio. \nField Day is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend; no license is needed to join in on the fun. The San Benito County Amateur Radio Association\, along with the Garlic Valley Amateur Radio Club and the Morgan Hill Amateur Radio Society\, will be setting up at the TEEC buliding at Christmas Hill Park\, 7050 Miller Ave\, Gilroy\, and will be operating from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Stations will be set up that will enable people to talk to faraway places like Illinois\, and Canada (examples of contacts made last year).  Radios that can make international and space (International Space Station\, amateur radio satellites) contacts will be set up as well. \nAnyone may become a licensed amateur radio operator.  There are more than 725\,000 licensed hams in the United States\, as young as 5 or as old as 100 years old. With clubs in San Benito County and in southern Santa Clara County\, it’s easy to get involved.  For information on becoming an amateur radio operator\, go to sbcara.org/testing-training/.  We would enjoy you attending Field Day or one of our other events. \nCheck out our website for upcoming events online at sbcara.org. \nFollow us on Twitter @sbcara; on Facebook; or on Instagram.
