SUMMARY:Youth Rally
DESCRIPTION:The Youth Rally-Hollister is for ALL Youth in San Benito County. \n  \nMission: To create fun and engaging activities throughout the year that will install values\, community connections and leadership opportunities for the youth of San Benito County. \n  \nVision: That the residents of San Benito County would rise up and meet the needs of all youth in our community by providing free activities throughout the year\, on a monthly or quarterly basis\, for youth who may not be able to afford them. In doing so\, adults would mentor youth and provide them with positive role which would  encourage them in their physical\, emotional\, mental and spiritual well-being. \n  \nOur goal is to make this a FREE event and in order to make this happen we need community volunteers to organize and resource their contacts to donate time\, raffle items\, games\, activities\, and more. I am currently working on setting up an account the Community Foundation for tax deductible donations to be accepted. \n  \nHow this came about: \nAfter the stabbing death Andres Guzman\, a local Hollister teen\, there was much public outcry and the community shouted ENOUGH! \nThe local Neighborhood Watch page on Facebook was blowing up with comments about ENOUGH being ENOUGH. \nMany people provided input on the fact that there is little for youth to do in our community that is affordable to the low-income population. Youth need to have positive reinforcement and a sense of belonging. Without that they put themselves at risk of being lured into gangs in order to feel they are part of a family. Years ago the community held an annual Teen Rally. \nAfter the downturn in the economy many of the agencies involved no longer had the funding or the manpower to continue organizing the event. The last Teen Rally was held in May 2006. After reading all of the comments\, I stated that I was involved with the Teen Rally Committee back then and\, if the community was willing to step up to the plate\, I would be willing to take the lead to help revive the Teen Rally. \nA Teen Rally Brainstorming meeting was held on Saturday\, August 24\, 2013. At that meeting those in attendance came up with ideas on what types of activities should be included\, who could be contacted and what date the event should be held. \nYouth in attendance decided they wanted this event to be open to youth of all ages and not just teens. This way\, the older youth could mentor the younger youth. Ideas consisted of: Dance competitions\, Battle of the Bands\, Art Wall\, Poetry Slam\, Tie Dye Station\, Craft/Recycling Art Table\, Sports Challenges\, 3on3 Basketball\, Pick-up Volleyball\, Laser Tag\, Dunk Tank\, 50 foot Ice Cream Sundae\, Treasure Chest (Free Flea Market) and much more. \nOur goal is to make this a FREE event and in order to make this happen we need community volunteers to organize and resource their contacts to donate time\, raffle items\, games\, activities\, and more. \nLike us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/youthrally-hollister

SUMMARY:Teatro Milagro is proud to present Cuéntame Coyote at El Teatro Campesino
DESCRIPTION:May 1\, 2014–Cuéntame Coyote\, written and directed By Dañel Malán\, will be presented Friday\, May 16 and Saturday\, May 17\, 2014 at 8:00 PM at the El Teatro Campesino Playhouse (705 Fourth Street\, San Juan Bautista\, CA 95045). Tickets are $15.00 for adults\, $10.00 for Seniors\, Students\, and Children. Tickets available at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/631505 or the ETC box office two hours before the show. For more information call 1-800-838-3006. \nJourney through cold\, dark desert nights with two cousins desperately dreaming of a better future beyond the iron fence that marks la frontera. Fleeing sorrow and hopelessness\, they follow coyotes with two legs and four\, stepping over dried bones scorched by the sun\, chased by the wind that murmurs tales of Santa Muerte. Amid the dangers that lurk\, ready to pounce\, in that arid expanse they risk their lives with no one to trust but each other. Will their steps lead to the dreams they seek or vanish in the desert sands like so many before? Cuentame Coyote was developed after an intensive research trip to the Tohono O’odham reservation in Arizona. Sacred stories combined with migrant tales of the dangers of dehydration\, snakebite and scorpions in the desolate 100 degree desert heat fuel the storyline of this new Milagro work. Erubiel Valladares joins Milagro this season in the title role of Coyote. Ajai Terrazas Tripathi and Alida Holquín Wilson-Gunn are the two cousins and play various roles. \nJoin Milagro Theatre Founding Director\, Dañel Malan\, for a FREE “Reality Theatre” workshop\, in search of Aztlan. For the 2015 season\, Lakin Valdez of Teatro Campesino\, will write and direct this new work created from authentic stories from los lideres del moviemento. Malan is partnering with Valdez in the development of Searching for Aztlan\, which focuses on the roles that women have played in the history of los MEChistAs and into the future of Latinidad. Come share your story and be a part of the collaborative process of creating an original play on Saturday May 17th from 2 – 4 pm! This workshop is the first of three\, with the following two happening in Portland and Chicago. Searching for Aztlan\, will debut at the Milagro Theatre in January\, then tour the country through November of 2015. For more information\, contact Dañel Malan\, Founding Director\, at malan@milagro.org or Joe Luis Cedillo at jluisced@gmail.com \nThe mission of the Milagro Theatre is to provide extraordinary Latino theatre\, culture and arts education experiences for the enrichment of all communities. Since its founding in 1985\, Milagro has given a primary voice to issues affecting the local and national Latino community\, and has introduced a host of new performers to the local arts and education field. The company’s touring and education venture tours Oregon and the nation with original bilingual theatre productions and educational residencies. Current global issues are crafted into cutting edge dramatic plays infused with Latino culture and Spanish language. Since 1989 the touring program has provided culturally appropriate arts education & engagement programs that further Latino participation in the arts and building appreciation for culture.
