SUMMARY:Pile burning workshop and workparty
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 13 \nTime: 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. \nCCPBA will be hosting a late season Pile Burn Workshop/ work party near La Selva Beach\, Santa Cruz County. It will cover the basics of safely burning and the permit process. Post workshop\, we will put the new found skills to use by burning numerous vegetation piles for wildfire safety. This will be a free workshop and lunch will be provided by the landowner. Sign up here if you would like to join. \n  \nAlso relevant to the pile burning subject\, is that the CCPBA is considering the creation of a “Wildfire Preparation Brigade” for both the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Northern Santa Lucia Mountains. The brigade would be a network of volunteers willing to help people who live in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) perform pile burning safely\, create defensible space and make home hardening recommendations. Tools and gear would be provided by the CCPBA. This network would be low commitment and be based on availability/ interest. If this sounds interesting and that you might want to be involved in the forming of these brigades\, email Jared Childress at childress.ember@gmail.com

SUMMARY:San Benito County Conservation Plan AdHoc Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Monday May 3\, 2021 at 4 p.m \nSan Benito County\, along with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish & Wildlife has initiated the process of planning and developing a county-wide Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) and Natural Community Conservation Plan (NCCP) called the San Benito County Conservation Plan (SBCCP). The San Benito County 2035 General Plan includes a policy identified under NCR-A: Habitat Conservation Plan; “The County shall consider working with the state and federal agencies to prepare and adopt a Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) for listed and candidate species in San Benito County.” \n  \nThe SBC Board of Supervisors adopted Ordinance 541 on August 1\, 1988 establishing a habitat conservation plan study area and setting interim mitigation fees. Since 1988\, the County has been collecting fees from Ordinance 541 in preparation for an HCP and now\, between fees already collected\, and additional funding anticipated from a federal grant (pending)\, County staff is able to begin work to implement Ordinance 541 and the 2035 General Plan. On February 23\, 2021\, the Board of Supervisors gave RMA planning formal approval to proceed with the Section 6 grant submission. \nCounty residents can expect to see that this effort is value added to the whole community. There are many benefits for having HCP/NCCP’s in place\, including: \n\nStreamlined endangered species permitting process for projects\nProvides necessary agency permits\nIncrease in local control\nImproved mitigation and conservation outcomes for listed and sensitive species\nCreates new open space\nCreates new recreation\nProtects watersheds\nProtects viewsheds\nImplements local policies\nMitigates takings that will prevent new species listings\nProtects species against the effects of climate change\nThe County and residents become eligible for HCP Land Acquisition Program\nAttracts new money for conservation\n\n  \nAs part of the County’s planning and development for the San Benito County Conservation Plan there will be extensive public and stakeholder outreach to ensure that residents and stakeholders\, including agricultural stakeholders\, have multiple opportunities to provide input and help shape the plan. The County expect to find out in June whether it will be awarded grant funds to be able to start work on this effort. \n  \nAt this time\, County staff would like to introduce the San Benito County Conservation Plan\, and let you know that we will be coming back later this year\, if we are awarded federal funding\, to provide more detailed information. We look forward to hearing your thoughts\, interests\, and concerns. The County will also be updating our website later this week for stakeholders to stay up to date on the process at this link.  The County has formed an ADHOC Committee and will post scheduled meetings on the website for all interested to attend (including limited in-person attendance\, per current Covid-19 guidelines). The first meeting is scheduled for Monday May 3\, 2021 at 4 p.m. The purpose of the ADHOC Committee is to educate the local community on the benefits of pursuing the SBCCP and providing a means for members of the community to take part in the planning process. \n
