SUMMARY:Annual Bilingual Play (Spanish/English)
DESCRIPTION:Community Solutions presents Historias de Mi Madre XI: Un Mundo Raro (A Strange World) on Saturday\, December 2\, 2017 at 6:30pm at Gavilan College Theatre\, located at 5055 Santa Teresa Boulevard in Gilroy. This bilingual play focuses on how topics of domestic violence\, sexual assault\, gender roles\, and LGBTQ were addressed from the 1950’s to present day.\n“We are very excited to present Un Mundo Raro (a Strange World) to the South County community\,” stated Perla Flores\, author and director of the Historias de Mi Madre series. “Through this play\, we want to begin a multi-generational dialogue on healthy relationships\, gender equality\, and respect\,” she concluded. \nThe play follows the lives of Jorge\, Lucha\, and Manuel\, three elderly individuals living in a nursing home and reflecting on how issues of domestic violence\, sexual assault\, gender roles\, and LGBTQ were addressed during their youth. Several members of the elderly community residing throughout Santa Clara County were interviewed for this production to ensure an adequate portrayal of their experiences as Latino men and women growing up during a time of deeply entrenched social norms and gender stereotypes.\nAngelica León has participated in almost all of the Historias de Mi Madre productions. She plays Lucha in Un Mundo Raro. “I work with the elderly community as a social worker. I am very excited to be a part of this production because I believe the arts are a great way to bridge the communication gap between the older and younger generations. Lucha’s character reminds me of many of the elderly women I have worked with – strong\, determined\, sassy – and sadly\, as in Lucha’s case\, many of the them have been victims of sexual assault or domestic violence. Sometimes both. It’s important to shed light on these critical social issues in a way that’s educational and also entertaining. I hope the community will come out and be part of this experience with us.”\nThis play is intended for a mature audience. Due to mature content\, the play may not be appropriate for children. There is a suggested $10.00 donation\, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.\nProceeds from the evening will support Community Solutions’ programs and services for survivors of domestic violence\, sexual assault\, and human trafficking in our community.\nFor information regarding Historias de Mi Madre Un Mundo Raro\, call (408) 776-6294.\nFor domestic violence/ sexual assault services\, call Community Solutions’ toll-free 24-hour bilingual crisis line at: 1-877-END-SADV (1-877-363-7238).\nCommunity Solutions has provided comprehensive human services to South Santa Clara County and the surrounding areas for over forty years. The agency offers a broad spectrum of services for mental health\, substance abuse\, family dysfunction\, sexual assault\, juvenile delinquency\, domestic violence\, and youth development. Community Solutions works in partnership with community-based organizations\, law enforcement\, local schools\, and County health and human service providers. SUMMARY:Loving Watercolor: Paintings of the California Missions by Nancy Burtch Hauk (1944-2016)
DESCRIPTION:Hauk Exhibit of California Mission Watercolors Opens \nAn exhibit of Nancy Burtch Hauk’s California Mission watercolors at Mission San Juan Batista will open with a reception Sunday\, Dec. 17\, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. – the public is invited. The exhibit\, “Loving Watercolor: Paintings of the California Missions by Nancy Burtch Hauk (1944-2016)”\, will run through March 2018. \nHauk’s exhibit will feature some twenty watercolors and gouaches of her favorite missions that are scattered across the near landscape\, just beyond her home in Pacific Grove. Many of these paintings included in this show are recent finds that have never been exhibited – fittingly they make their debut in a gallery space within the Mission San Juan Bautista Museum. \nThe artist often visited the missions of Mission San Juan Bautista\, Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo\, Mission Neustra Senora de la Soledad\, and Mission San Antonio de Padua to paint studies of their interior wall decorations\, and then uniquely tie these decorations into her exterior paintings of the missions. Hauk was never happier than when she was painting\, it was something that brought her great personal pleasure. She delighted in studying with such prominent painters as Sam Colburn\, national academicians Gregory Kondos and Don Nice\, and Jann Pollard. \nCenter to the exhibit is Hauk’s painting titled\, “The Mission”\, which is an exquisite watercolor of Mission San Juan Batista under a dado star and sun lit sky accentuated by a distinctive divide. Giclées (fine art digital print made on inkjet printer) of this beautiful watercolor will be available in the mission’s gift shop along with note cards bearing a reproduction of the “The Mission” – perfect for the holidays.  \nMission San Juan Bautista is located at 406 2nd Street in San Juan Bautista (just off Hwy 156)\, which is about a 30 minute drive from Monterey. The exhibit is open Mondays – Saturdays 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.; Sundays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the exhibit\, call 831-238-5254.

SUMMARY:BSA Troop 436 / 428 Christmas Tree Pick UP
DESCRIPTION:Our local Scouts are ready to help out local citizens. On December 30th and 31st\, 2017 and January 6th and 7th\, 2018\, both Scout Troops 436 and 428 will be helping local citizens with their discarded Christmas Trees. All citizens have to do is place their Christmas trees out by the curb by 9:00 am and scouts will come by and pick up the tree. All of the trees will then be recycled. What and easy way to discard your tree! The scouts are asking for a $8.00 donation that will go to help with the costs for different activities to help further their scouting achievements. This is a major fundraiser for the scouts as it helps them throughout the year and helps scouts at all different levels and ranks. This donation can be left either with the tree or the Scouts will leave an envelope at the house if there is not a donation with the tree and if people choose to donate they can mail the donation in. \nFor more information please check out our direct link to our website:\nhttp://bsatroop436.webs.com/christmas-tree-pick-up \nAny questions please contact hollistertroop436@gmail.com or san.juan.troop0428@gmail.com \nOn behalf of Boy Scout Troop 436 and 428 we thank you in advance for your support and wish you a very Happy New Year!!!!
