DESCRIPTION:After being held remotely last year\, the FREE 17th Annual Marian Filice Youth Piano Competition and Music Festival returns in-person to the Gavilan campus in Gilroy on Sunday\, March 6thstarting at 9 am. The competition showcases students in 5th through 12th grades. The Awards Ceremony will be held around 3 pm. The Music Festival starts right after the competition and will feature musicians of all ages. \nMaria Amirkhanian\, Music faculty and longtime Coordinator of the event shared: \n“We are so excited to bring this community competition back for an incredible in-person experience! Live music carries a richer resonance when it is witnessed in-person. All of our contestants are looking forward to showcasing their pieces.”   \nThis event is FREE to the entire community\, but the following safety protocols must be followed in order to attend. \n– Adults must show proof of vaccination at the door \n– Adults must have Photo ID \n– Attendees must scan in before entering the Theater \n– Masks will be required indoors \n– Subject to change based on current Public Health Guidelines \nThe competition is named after Marian Filice.  Mrs. Filice was an active member in our community. She taught piano privately and was a huge supporter of the arts. Her passion for the piano inspired generations. The Gavilan College Music Program hopes that the competition will inspire young musicians in the community and encourage them to strive for musical excellence. \nFor more information\, email mamirkhanian@gavilan.edu.

DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join The GardenShoppe for our first murder mystery party of the year: Murder at the Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball! \nThe citizens of New Orleans are thrilled that the owners of the old Madison Avenue Mansion are hosting the annual Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball again this year. However\, everybody knows that when events are held at the mansion\, something always goes wrong. The Madison Avenue Mansion is an infamous manor\, built in the mid-1800s\, and rumored to be haunted by ill-spirited ghosts. Wedding ceremonies held there end in divorce\, travelers that stay there go missing\, and even one time during a gala event\, an uninvited ninja that tried to rob the guests choked to death after stealing a bite of cake! \nThe $40.00 ticket price includes the game and dinner consisting of red beans and rice\, andouille sausage\, New Orleans-style string beans\, pralines\, and of course a King Cake for dessert. We will also be serving our version of the Hurricane Drink. This is not a dinner theater\, you are the characters and we assign the roles by e-mail. The ticket price will increase to $50.00 on February 14th.

DESCRIPTION:Race Day Registration and Packet/Bib pickup begins at 7:15am\nThis event is in its 38th year. It is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hollister and all proceeds go to benefit local scholarships and charities. San Juan Bautista is a small California Mission town just off Hwy 101 approximately 50 miles south of San Jose. The four races: one-half marathon\, 10 miles\, 5k and 1 Mile kids fun run\, all start and finish in front of the historic and beautiful San Juan Mission. The area is rural and the course takes runners through farm land and up the Anzar hills. Medals are awarded three deep in standard age categories. The one-half marathon and 10-mile races (both TAC Distance Certified) are particularly good training for upcoming spring marathons. Theme teams encouraged and trophies will be awarded to top teams. There are hundreds of interesting varieties available from seed that you can’t find at the nurseries but there are a few tricks to getting them started from seed. In this virtual class\, we’ll discuss varieties that do well on the central coast\, the equipment you’ll need to provide bottom heat and light in winter months with a few low-cost options for home gardeners\, how to avoid common problems like damping-off disease and when to harden off and plant outside. \nAbout the instructor: Delise Weir holds degrees in Environmental Studies and Biology and has grown food\, flowers\, and herbs for over 40 years. She became a UC Master Gardener in 2014 and loves to share her knowledge of gardening. \nThe class is free to all with the option to provide a suggested donation of $5 or more to support the all-volunteer UC Master Gardener program.
