DESCRIPTION:A free event offering a green counterpoint to New York Fashion Week (taking place Sept 8-12) \n\nBrown bag lunch and a solutions-based presentation on textile waste and the myriad of alternatives we can choose every time we get dressed. Shana McCracken will show a sampling from her collection of fashions made from salvaged materials that might otherwise go to landfill.\n\n\nWhy: \n\nTextile waste is a serious problem locally and around the globe. Here in San Benito County textiles were identified in 2021 as one of the top contaminants in our recycling stream. The State of California has also identified textiles as a target material for waste prevention\, reuse and recycling. \nNet proceeds will benefit Fashion Revolution (fashionrevolution.org). \n\n\nWho: \nAnyone interested in fashion\, sustainability\, and the intersection between the two\nRegistration encouraged. Seating is very limited.\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Shana Levy McCracken\, Green MBA\nShana has 29 years experience in the waste industry as well as three “green” degrees. She studied sustainable fashion and textiles at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Summer Institute two years running and is nearing completion of a certificate in Fashion Design & Merchandising from Cañada College in Redwood City. Shana developed a curriculum called 4R Fashion\, delving into the range of possibilities for reducing textile waste—from designing it out on the front end to composting it at the end. She is the founder and past chair of the California Resource Recovery Association’s Prevention\, Reuse & Repair Technical Council and currently serves on the California Product Stewardship Council’s Statewide Textile Recovery Advisory Committee or STRAC.

DESCRIPTION:The weekend of Sept 30 Oct 2 2022 offers three events for amateur radio operators in San Benito County. \nFirst on the list of events is the California QSO Party (CQP).  For those of you who don’t know\, a QSO Party is when amateur radio operators try to contact as many other operators living in a specific location. For the CQP\, operators from all over the world will try to contact as many operators as possible from all 58 counties in California. It starts on Saturday morning and ends on Sunday afternoon.  The San Benito County Amateur Radio Association (SBCARA) will set up the N6SBC station and operate from the county fair. \nThis leads to the second weekend event: the San Benito County Fair.  The SBCARA will be at the fair to answer your questions about amateur radio\, how they help in emergencies\, and how to get licensed. \nAnd finally\, October 1st is the Simulated Emergency Test (SET) run by the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) throughout the United States.  During the SET\, radio operators will be given tasks similar to what they would receive during a real emergency. \nFor information on how to get involved with amateur radio in San Benito County\, please visit their website at https://sbcara.org
