Artists and art aficionados filled the ARTspace Annex in downtown Hollister on March 22 to kickoff the San Benito County Arts Council’s 2019 Open Studio Art Tour.

The two-day tour takes place April 13-14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is also a preview exhibition on display until April 5 at the Annex, 217 Fifth Street in Hollister.

This year’s tour consists of 48 artists showing their work at 18 locations in Aromas, Hollister and San Juan Bautista. Various media including painting, ceramics, jewelry, photography and wood sculpture are represented in the event.

The preview exhibit “is a great time for the artists to meet each other, sometimes they are meeting for the first time, and it is a great way for the public to get a sneak peak at the of some of the artwork on the tour,” said Jennifer Laine, executive director of the San Benito County Arts Council.

At the kickoff event, artist Jane Rekedal, who will be showing her ceramic work in Aromas, was talking about art and drinking wine with two of her former Gavilan College students, Sophie Lastra and Reba Oswald.

“I have always participated in open studios and have had my own open studio since 1975,” Rekedal told BenitoLink. “I have served on the Arts Council for many, many years as a board member. I am no longer a board member but I still support them.”

Artists and attendees mingled as the evening continued.

“I can use watercolors, pencils and other mediums to make realism,” said Aaron Graves who is participating in the open studio tour with his cousin and fellow artist Michaela Graves. “Everyone can do this but we stop at a certain age, we do not continue it.”

Here are links to participating artists and a map of locations.
