Excitement coursed through the air on March 29 as San Benito High School student and field hockey player Railyn King signed onto the Division 2 University of Mount Olive in North Carolina. The signing took place during lunch.
King is the first female San Benito High School student to receive a scholarship to play field hockey in college. Field hockey was added four years ago to the high school's list of sports. King started playing the first year field hockey was introduced, which was also her freshman year.
The signing was an event to celebrate, so with the help of Principal Adrian Ramirez and King's family (which includes former Miss San Benito Rodeo Queen Corissa King), a ceremony was put together. The ceremony started off with King signing onto the D2 college in front of proud family, friends and staff members, and was followed with a couple of speeches.
“Congratulations Railyn family mom dad brother and sister," Ramirez said.
The whole ceremony ended with King giving a long thank you to everyone who helped her get to where she is today.
“Thank you everyone for coming," she said. "This was a hard decision to make. I’m glad that I was able to play field hockey for the last four years. And thank you to everyone who has helped me throughout the four years that I’ve been here and beyond that. You've all each and everyone of you in this room has made an impact on me so thank you for that and thank you for coming.”
King is expected to begin playing Division 2 collegiate field hockey this fall.
