Albert Carl Semenza was born in Hollister, California on September 24, 1929. His father, John Semenza Sr. born November 12, 1892, immigrated to San Juan Bautista, California, from Varese Ligure, Italy. His mother Mary Sanguinetti, born Septemebe 9, 1902, immigrated to Hollister, California, from Sestri Levante, Italy.
Albert’s family came to San Benito County in the early 1900’s, where they owned and operated local apricot orchards. Albert has two siblings, John F. Semenza born in Hollister 1923, and Beverly (Semenza) Johnson born in Hollister 1932. He also has extended family from his other relatives who immigrated to San Benito County from Italy.
Albert Semenza received a master’s degree in Education from San Jose State University where he met his wife JoAnn Thane, also with a degree in Education from San Jose State University. Albert served as a Sergeant in the United States Airforce during the Korean War.
He and his wife JoAnn worked as educators and administrator in the California Public Schools throughout Central California. They had daughters Robin Coreen Semenza in 1956, and Sheryl Relene Semenza in 1965. Their daughter Sheryl married her late husband Randall Jay Neufeld in 1996, and they have two children who also reside in Hollister.
Albert enjoyed gardening, swimming and hiking. Albert is preceded by his father, mother, brother, wife, son-in-law, and daughter Robin. Albert is survived by his sister, daughter Sheryl, and grandchildren.
