Passed Away On: July 11, 2022

Our hearts are broken with the loss of our beloved father David Clapham, affectionately known as “Red Dog”, and “Coach”.

David Guy Clapham was born in San Jose in 1952 to parents John and Jackie Clapham. Dave attended Overfelt High School where he began his football career. He went on to play at San Jose City College, and earned a scholarship to The University of Nevada Reno, where he graduated with a degree in political science. While at UNR, he earned All American NCAA status as an offensive lineman and was later inducted into the Hall of Fame for both football and boxing. He also played for the San Francisco 49ers rookie squad in 1974, and multiple seasons on the San Jose Tigers, where he again achieved HOF recognition.

Dave married his beautiful bride Lauren (Johnson) in 1983. Family members fondly recount how the couple would light up the room with their love and charisma. Dave and Lauren made their home in Hollister, California, and raised two sons there: John David “JD” and Adam.

Clapham’s coaching career spanned over 25 years, and included Gavilan College, West Valley College, San Benito High School, and Central Coast Barnstormers; leading to multiple State and National Championships.

Dave had a long career in Probation with Santa Clara County. He had a passion for helping young men transition into adulthood, and positively impacted numerous lives.

Dave was a devoted husband, amazing athlete, passionate coach, rockstar father, and an advocate for social justice.
Dave is survived by his two sons: JD and Adam Clapham, numerous nieces and nephews, and a large extended family. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lauren. Dave’s family is comforted knowing he is finally reunited with the love of his life. Dave liked to joke, danced, and lived like he brought the party. He will be greatly missed. Rest easy, coach.

A celebration of life to be announced at a later date.
