Lucy Evelyn Pellin, known to most as Evelyn, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2023 at the age of 95 in Hollister, California.
Evelyn was born in Hollister to Lester and Myrtle Garner. She attended local schools and graduated from the local high school.
Evelyn met the love of her life, Richard, at a dance in San Juan Bautista, and they were married in 1944. They were married for 62 years, until his death in 2007.
Along with raising her four children and eight nieces and nephews, Evelyn also taught swimming to a good portion of the children of San Benito County, both at Bolado Park through Red Cross, and later at the Cinderella Motel. Many county residents enjoyed her synchronized swimming programs held during the San Benito County Fair. She was also a 4H cooking leader.
In her spare time, she was an accomplished artist, belonging to the Art League in Hollister. She made beautiful crochet and knitting pieces, stained glass projects, and both oil and more recently water color paintings. Friends and family looked forward to receiving hand painted birthday and Christmas cards each year.
Evelyn loved traveling to many places. She always teased that her middle name was “go”. Evelyn loved adventure, even requesting to have her family members join her in Felton to go zip-lining for her 85th birthday. She and Richard would spend six months of each year, for over 20 years, traveling to Loreto, Baja, Mexico, where they had many friends to play Bocce ball, games, and traveling the countryside. They knew where all the best fish tacos, margaritas, and snorkeling places were.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard, sister Charlotte Taylor, and brothers Volney, Ralph, and Leroy Garner, grandson Mark Pellin, and nephews Don and Gregg Garner.
Evelyn is survived by sons Larry and Mike (Rhonda), daughters Beverly Pellin and Annette Ross; nieces Gail Miller (Charles), Denise Garner (Gabe), and Cindy Calasopa (Mike); nephews Ron Garner (Susan), Dennis Garner (Renee), Kenny Garner (Judy), and Don Garner’s widow Nancy.
