On June 1, 2020, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published a proposed rule in the Federal Register to remove the San Benito evening primrose from the Federal List of Threatened and Endangered Wildlife and Plants. The plant was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1985. The Service is committed to using the best available scientific information to inform our decisions regarding species’ classification. The scientific community’s understanding of the San Benito evening primrose’s ecology and habitat has improved, and the restoration and protection of land previously used for recreation now provides undisturbed habitat for plants and wildlife. At the time of listing the San Benito evening primrose was documented in only nine locations in San Benito County. Annual surveys since have found more than 100 areas where the plants exist across San Benito, Monterey and Fresno counties. The Service opened a 60-day comment period on the proposed delisting on June 1, 2020. Comments and information related to the proposed rule will be accepted until July 31, 2020. A copy of the proposed rule and other information is available online at www.regulations.gov. In the Enter Keyword or ID box, enter FWS–R8–ES–2019–0065, which is the docket number for this rulemaking. Comments can be submitted electronically at www.regulations.gov.
