Residents of Ridgemark Golf Club and Resort were suddenly awakened Friday night, Sept. 29, as fire swept through a condominium. The Hollister fire department responded to a call at 11:23 p.m.
“The fire was contained 40 minutes after the call, at 12:05 a.m.,” said Hollister Fire Chief Bob Martin Del Campo. “There were five people displaced and there were two injuries. One of them had minor burn injuries and the other was moderately injured (sprained ankle) after tripping over our hoses.”
The two injured people were transported to Hazel Hawkins Hospital. Chief Martin Del Campo could not confirm who the victims were because of patient confidentiality.
“The condominium was a total loss,” Martin Del Campo said, adding that, as of yet, there is no estimated of replacement value of the damages. “There was moderate exposure to the left and right of the building, so there will be significant work to be done in order for them (residents) to get access back into those buildings.”
He said the cause of fire will be under investigation, but there are a couple of good leads.
“The fire investigator, fortunately, lives in Ridgemark and was one of the first at the scene, so the cause and origin is under investigation right now,” he said. “Depending on the extent of the damage, it usually takes anywhere between a couple of days to a week or so, depending on the witnesses and interviews he can get.”
Martin Del Campo described the fire scene as a “defensive posture rather than offensive,” meaning the firefighters concentrated on containing the fire, rather than trying to extinguish it.
“There were 18 firefighters on the scene and five pieces of equipment,” he said of the response.
