Central Coast ranchers will have an opportunity to learn more about a variety of issues that affect them on a daily basis. The University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) and University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension are working with the Monterey Cattlemen’s and Cattlewomen’s Associations to hold a workshop titled, “Focus on the Beef Cow.” The workshop will be held in two locations: Monterey County and San Luis Obispo County. San Benito County ranchers are encouraged to attend as well.
Cooperative Extension advisors and specialists will provide information that ranchers can use right away to make improvements to their operations. Bridger Feuz, livestock marketing specialist with the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension, will speak about risk management and economic ranch tools.
Hudson Hill, an extension educator, also from the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension, will cover cow herd nutrition. These two out-of-state guests will focus on important livestock issues more broadly and UCCE advisors will bring a focus to issues affecting ranchers specifically on California’s Central Coast.
Royce Larsen, a UCCE advisor based in San Luis Obispo County, will cover drought and wet cycles on the Central Coast and risks for livestock production systems. Devii Rao, the UCCE advisor based in San Benito County, will discuss invasive weeds on the Central Coast. Josh Davy, Tehama County-based UCCE advisor, will present on local livestock nutritional and health issues.
For ranchers interested in foothill abortion, Jeff Stott, UCCE Professor of Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology at U.C. Davis, will provide an update on the foothill abortion vaccine (San Luis Obispo County only).
