San Benito County native, Robert Rivas to run for Assembly

Robert Rivas announces that he will be a 30th Assembly District candidate.

San Benito County Supervisor Robert Rivas announced Jan. 11 that he is entering the contest for the 30th Assembly District seat. His campaign announcement states that he will focus on education, roads, and protecting the environment. The news release provided by Rivas for Assembly also says that he has an interest in affordable housing and better paying jobs in San Benito County. He pledges to be a strong advocate for local farmers.

Rivas is a San Benito County native and was raised in farmworker housing near Hollister. He graduated from San Benito High School and returned to the area after college. Rivas has worked as a lecturer at Gavilan College, a paid call firefighter for six years in Hollister, and in staff positions for Assembly-members Simon Salinas and Anna Caballero. Since 2010, Rivas has served on the San Benito County Board of Supervisors.

“I am a lifelong resident of this region, and I will work tirelessly to make sure the 30th Assembly District has a strong advocate in Sacramento," Rivas is quoted as saying. "We have been fortunate to have a strong leader in Anna Caballero fighting for us. I will continue to work on the issues Anna has championed to improve the quality of life of everyone in our region." Improving roads and the region’s transportation system will be a priority for Rivas. “Traffic congestion diminishes our quality of life and pollutes our environment,” Rivas said. “We need urgent fixes for this issue.”

Protecting the environment will be another key focus of his campaign, the notice said. Rivas was part of a successful effort to ban fracking in San Benito County.

"I am proud to support Robert Rivas for Assembly. Supervisor Rivas has been a strong advocate for family farmers in San Benito County. He possesses the temperament, values, and honesty to be an effective leader in Sacramento,” said Joe Zanger, lifelong family farmer.

The announcement also provided quotes from other regional leaders, like Vince Grewohl, president of the Hollister Firefighters Association, Blanca Alvarado, former Santa Clara County Superviso and Gonzales Mayor Maria Orozco who said, “County Supervisor Robert Rivas is a problem solver. He knows our community,” she was quoted saying. “I trust him to fight for us in Sacramento and deliver results.”

Excellent article, Robert, but the you tube message brought me to tears. I am so very proud to support your campaign. You and your family are THE real story of immigration, proving that with sacrifice and hard work, anything is possible! I will send this and the You Tube link to my fellow Dems in Santa Clara County and to the Delegates that represent AD 30. Well done, Robert!
