The Nov. 20 workshop on marketing livestock and other ranch products will help you determine what market is best for the ranch: direct to restaurants, retail stores, or customers through a CSA or farmer’s market. The workshop will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Elkhorn Slough Marine Reserve and Fiesta Farm in Watsonville.
Understanding the expectations of wholesale distributors or brokers is essential for success in those markets. This workshop will provide insight into these highly competitive outlets, such as determining what is the best strategy for value-added products based on the capacity of your infrastructure or access to community infrastructure. Being creative with presentations to be best appreciated by the market requires understanding who your customers are and is key to profitable marketing. Learning negotiating skills as a supplier comes by believing they need you as much as you want them. Here is an opportunity to hone those essential skills.
Also Included: The 101 Livestock Auction—different categories and values, challenges and successes of selling grassfed beef, new standards for selling whole animals AB 2114 (cattle only).
Speakers will include Dina Izzo of BluDog Consulting, Julie Morris of Morris Grassfed, Pam Krone of CMSF, Devii Rao of UCCE, Sarah Lopez of Fiesta Farm, and Jim Warren of 101 Livestock.
