The Hollister City Council on Monday night appointed Jim Gillio to fill the seat vacated when District 4 Councilman Roy Sims resigned after announcing he was purchasing a house outside of the district.

Nine candidates applied and were interviewed in a rare, 4 p.m. pre-meeting session. The remaining four council members announced their decision after asking questions of each applicant.

Gillio's term will run until 2018. He observed the meeting but did not participate as a voting member.
