Hollister police officers responded to a call of a dog on a ledge of a window on Tuesday afternoon, July 19. When they arrived, the dog fell and was caught by an officer.

According to a press release, a concerned citizen advised there was a dog leaning out through a broken screen window of a second-story condominium on the 200 block of Gibson Drive. The caller feared the dog would jump or fall.

Animal Care and Services called Hollister Police to respond. Hollister Police Officers Melgoza and Tong arrived and could see a small Shih Tzu — later identified as Sophie — on the window ledge outside of a broken screen.

Bystanders told the officers the dog had been out on the window ledge for a couple of hours. While officers were attempting to contact the owner, the dog suddenly stumbled and fell from the window.

Officer Tong was able to react and catch the dog before it hit the ground, saving the dog from injury. Police officers were not able to reach the dog’s owner at the home, but left messages. Sophie was later claimed by her owner at the Hollister Animal Shelter and is safely home again.

Animal Care and Services would like to remind everyone to make sure fences and windows are secure. Also, to make sure pets have a micro-chip and identification on their collars.
