Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital’s Obstetrical Department received recognition for its participation in the California Partnership for Maternal Safety, a multi-year, multi-stakeholder project offered by California Maternal Care Quality Collaborative (CMQCC) to assist California hospitals in standardizing care for patients with obstetric hemorrhage and preeclampsia.

The objectives of CPMS are to:

  • Decrease maternal morbidity and mortality related to obstetric hemorrhage and preeclampsia (severe hypertension in pregnancy).
  • Ensure 100 percent of hospitals with maternity services in California have implemented patient safety bundles for obstetric hemorrhage and preeclampsia.

“I am so proud of the OB nurses who worked so hard to achieve this recognition. It reflects the excellent care that is provided to our patients,” said Interim Maternal/Child Director Linda Lico, R.N.  “Participating in this training enhances the level of service excellence Hazel Hawkins’ OB Department offers.”

In addition to the recognition the staff received, it also earned the prestigious “Quest for Zero” Award for Excellence in OB safety standards from BETA Healthcare Group. This is an OB patient safety initiative designed to reduce preventable birth injuries.

The OB staff has received Tier I and Tier II awards for four consecutive years from 2012 through 2015.

To meet the strict requirements established by BETA, a hospital must demonstrate 100 percent compliance with all elements of the program. Members of the hospital’s perinatal team, comprised of OB nurses and physicians, were required to complete 18 hours of eLearning and training focused on meeting specific quality of care criteria which included electronic fetal monitoring and analysis, team communications strategies, and emergency management in labor and delivery. The team then successfully passed an in-house survey by a Beta Healthcare Safety executive.
