41 new apartments are being built on Buena Vista Road.

CHISPA is constructing a new 41-unit affordable housing development in Hollister — Buena Vista Apartments — located at 810 Buena Vista Rd. Construction is anticipated to be completed in March of 2017. The apartments will be rented to low-income families.

CHISPA is accepting applications from prospective tenants now through Dec. 30, 2016. All applications received during this period will then be sorted by a random selection process to establish order for the application review. For more information on the application process, call CHISPA at (831) 757-6254, or go to CHISPA’s website at www.chispahousing.org.

Applications can be submitted to CHISPA in person at the Salinas or Hollister offices, by email, fax or mail. The Hollister office is located at 615 San Benito St., Suite E, and is open Wednesday and Friday from 1-5 p.m.

Buena Vista Apartments will consist of three, one-bedroom; 25, two-bedroom; and 12, three-bedroom apartments; a manager’s unit, as well as several common areas for relaxing and socializing, including a 2,000-square-foot community center where community organizations provide services for residents. Amenities include a barbecue area, children’s play area, fitness room, community garden, computers with Internet access and laundry facilities.

Dana Cleary, director of real estate development for CHISPA, said the property “is being constructed with the intent of providing housing for low-income people who cannot afford to purchase property.   We are not building a condominium here – so no ownership opportunities.” However, she added, “we also are going to build 13 homes next door to the apartment buildings – we’ll get started with those in the next couple of months. Those will be for sale.”

Ed Reinhart, AIA, project architect, and Central Coast Residential Builders, the general contractor, are working with CHISPA to include energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly design features at this LEED Gold building. Solar panels will provide efficient energy and drought-tolerant landscaping will reduce water use. Appliances will be Energy Star Certified. Storm water will be filtered on site by a bioswale.

Project funding is provided by Wells Fargo Bank, Bonneville Multifamily Capital, County of San Benito (HOME funding and Mental Health Services Act funding), and the City of Hollister. Equity is provided by Wells Fargo Bank through the California Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program.
