Hollister’s Animal Shelter will be closed to new arrivals for a tentative two-week period, according to Hollister Animal Care and Services social media.

That means no stray intakes and owner-surrendered animals will be admitted to the shelter during the closure period. The closure is due to a potential parvovirus exposure from a stray puppy and more recently, a case of panleukopenia (feline distemper) in a stray kitten, according to a city Animal Care and Services Facebook post.

The post indicated that current shelter animals will be monitored and evaluated daily while staff continues to observe a quarantine period for animals who might have been exposed.

Staff is also undertaking additional sanitation measures to ensure the health and safety of shelter animals, according to the post, and once the quarantine period has been met and animals have been cleared, they will be made available for adoption and the shelter will resume normal operations.

All stray and surrendered animals are appropriately vaccinated at intake, the post said, however it is important for each pet owner to ensure puppies and kittens and even adult pets receive age appropriate vaccinations on a veterinary-approved vaccination schedule to ensure the future health and safety of your pet(s) and those around them.

The post also expressed appreciation for the community’s support and patience as shelter staff works through the process.

BenitoLink reached out to the shelter for more information but had not heard back at the time of publication.
