Honoring 14 area businesses which earned green business certification awards over the past year, the San Benito County Integrated Waste Management and the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Monterey Bay Area Green Business Program held a ceremony to mark the achievements on July 16.

The businesses, which included BenitoLink, were praised for their accomplishment.

Integrated Waste Management Manager Celina Stotler told BenitoLink, “Becoming a certified green business is not only good for the environment, but also good for business. A green business goes above and beyond to reduce waste, to prevent pollution, and to conserve resources—ultimately reducing utility and operational costs. In San Benito County, green businesses are setting a strong example, leading the transition toward a more sustainable and resilient local economy.”

Guest speakers included San Juan Bautista Mayor Leslie Jordan and Margot Tankersley of Margot’s Ice Cream Parlor, who also received certification. Translation of all speeches was provided by Alma Cruz from the San Benito County Clerk-Recorder office.

Presenting certificates were Jordan, Andres Rodriguez representing Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, Supervisor Angela Curro representing state Senator John Laird, Hollister City Councilmember Rudy Picha, San Benito County Supervisor Kollin Kosmicki.

Addressing an audience of about 50 people, Tankersley said she is not only a green business but an influencer, taking time to talk to other businesses in San Juan Bautista about the importance of being a green business.

Jordan thanked the newest members of the green business community and also expressed the importance of such an effort. She added that San Juan Bautista City Hall is working on renovations that should be finished soon and the building will then be green. She said she was hoping the group could view the improvements but they were not ready in time.
