Featuring speakers and workshops, plus an open mic for budding poets, this year’s California Poets in the Schools symposium, “The Future We Speak” will be held in various locations in Hollister on Aug. 15-17.
Local participants can sign up for the full event or specific sections here.
According to the symposium’s website, California Poets in the Schools “develops and empowers a multicultural network of independent poet-teachers, who bring the many benefits of poetry to youth throughout the state.”
The site also notes, “As a membership network, we offer opportunities for professional development, peer learning and fundraising assistance for poet-teachers in California. We also cultivate relationships with school districts, foundations and arts organizations which can fund and support our members’ professional practices.”
Events will be held at the Arts Council, the Community Foundation Epicenter and Hill’s Bookstore.
According to the CalPoets schedule, symposium events will begin Aug. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the Arts Council, 35 5th Street, Suite D, in Hollister, featuring CalPoets Program Manager Fernando Albert Salinas’ evening program workshop, which is “designed to bring together both longtime members of our network and new voices, offering a space to connect, collaborate, and spark creativity.”
On Aug. 16, a full day of activities begins with The Creative Pulse: Poetry, Expression & Possibility in Community, a workshop led by award-winning author and interdisciplinary storyteller Rosanna Alverez.
According to a workshop description, “In a time when many educators, students, and communities are navigating exhaustion, disconnection, and despair, this restorative poetry workshop invites us to slow down, reconnect, and nourish our creative spirits.”
Other workshops follow throughout the day, as well as a poetry reading and book signing featuring Kim Addonizio, author of eight poetry collections, two novels, two story collections, and two books on writing poetry.
Morning events, which run from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., will take place at the Arts Council, 35 5th Street, Suite D, in Hollister, and the afternoon events, which run from 11:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., will take place at the Community Foundation Epicenter, 440 San Benito Street. Evening sessions from 3:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., will be located at both the Arts Council and Hill’s Bookstore.
The day closes with an open mic at Hill’s Bookstore. Tickets for open mic are free and there will be a sign-up sheet for anyone interested in taking the mic.
The event closes on Aug 17 at the Arts Council with a community meeting and breakfast at 9 a.m., followed by Chiado’s workshop titled “Gratitude as Gateway,” from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.
In this workshop, “participants will work with gratitude as a springboard for creating new work. Gratitude will also be explored as a method to structure student workshops and build community.”
