“Unlock Your Power” will be the message offered at the inaugural Women’s Empowerment Summit being held on Oct. 18 in San Juan Bautista at the Timeless Treasures Conference & Event Center.
Presented by Discover San Juan Bautista and the SJB Business Association, this ticketed event will feature eight speakers on subjects ranging from health to finances to the feeling that one’s success is not deserved.
“We want to enlighten the women in our community,” summit organizer Heliena Walton said. “Our panel will talk about things they’ve had to overcome to show that it doesn’t matter where you come from, you can make it.”
The name of the summit comes from the title of a book by keynote speaker Dr. Kim Barber, which she said she wrote after witnessing women in marginalizing experiences both nationally and internationally.
“My book is intended to empower women everywhere,” she said, “to help find who they are, and to find the strength and power to be able to define the purpose that they were born for, personally and professionally.”
Barber said that the summit will address many of the obstacles facing women today, such as work challenges, identity issues, health problems, domestic violence and underemployment. Another challenge is “imposter syndrome,” where women downplay their achievements through persistent self-doubt.
“I can speak to those,” she said, “because I saw all of them. It wasn’t just the people I talked to nationally and internationally, but also what I went through myself. We all have challenges ourselves, just being women.”

Barber said attendees will gain insights into specific tools that will help them recognize their obstacles, activate their inner power and put that power into action “to win.”
“We’ve seen a lot of women lose their power,” Barber said, “or even give it away without even knowing it. That can delay them in becoming all that they were going to be. We are trying to help them uncover the power that’s already there.”
The event will feature breakout sessions on various subjects, including one led by U.S. Bank manager Irene Recht, where attendees can discuss any questions they might have about their finances.
“People will complete a survey during registration,” Walton said, “to see what they want to talk about regarding planning their retirement or how to best utilize their money. Some of the younger ladies may have done nothing yet.”
Barber said the goal is for everyone to find their voice and learn how to work together in the community in a collaborative effort that will make things happen for them in every part of their lives.
“If you’re ready for a change,” she said, “and if you’re ready to be able to move forward, then you need to come. The tagline for us is hope, empower, elevate.”
