A Salinas man died as a result of a solo vehicle crash on San Juan Canyon Road in San Juan Bautista on Dec. 12, according to Detective Bryan Penny with the San Benito County Sheriff’s office.

Penny said Demetrio Santa Cruz, 20, was the passenger in a side-by-side off-road vehicle that crashed into a tree around 9:15 a.m. on the 3500 block of San Juan Canyon Road about four miles from Hwy 156.

Penny said the driver, who was taken to an area hospital, lost control of the vehicle while making a turn. He said he did not know the condition of the driver or where he lived.

Penny said the vehicle crashed against a tree and landed on its side. He said Santa Cruz and the driver were both wearing their seatbelts. It was not known where the two were heading or whether speed was a factor in the crash.
