The historic Adobe Home on 203 Fourth St., owned and maintained by San Juan Bautista Parlor No. 179 Native Daughters of the Golden West, is in need of repairs, restoration and seismic retrofitting. These items include repairs and restoration to the balcony and stairs outside, and seismic retrofitting to the roof.
This work, investigated and recommended in an assessment by Brett Brenkwitz and Charlie Franks, architects of Franks Brenkwitz Associates in Aptos, leaders in historic preservation of Adobe buildings, will have a significant cost. The parlor is seeking donations from member sisters, friends and neighbors in the community.
Last year, the parlor raised money that was matched by the Community Foundation for San Benito County to have the lower exterior portions of the Adobe walls repaired, drainage improved and properly covered. This work was performed by Chris Ingram Lath & Plaster of Carmel Valley.
The Adobe was originally purchased by the parlor and restored from its dilapidated condition in 1935. It has been in continual use since for monthly meetings and other activities. Today, it hosts a monthly Pedro Card Party (open to the public on the second Friday of every month), weekly yoga classes (open to the public every Monday) and other events supporting Native Daughters of the Golden West, Mission San Juan Bautista and other community groups.
San Juan Bautista Parlor No. 179 Native Daughters of the Golden West was instituted in 1910. The Native Daughters of the Golden West is a fraternal and patriotic organization founded on the principles of: Love of home, devotion to the flag, veneration of the pioneers, and faith in the existence of God. Since its inception in 1886, the work of this California organization has grown to include a variety of lasting initiatives: The Children’s Foundation, Americanism and civic participation, California Admission Day, California lighthouse preservation, California Mission restoration, education and scholarships, environmental issues, historical landmarks, annual art talent contest, a pioneer roster, and veterans’ welfare.
