The Superior Court of California, County of San Benito is pleased to announce the opening of its annual Law Day Essay Contest, held in celebration of Law Day on May 1. Observed nationwide, Law Day highlights the role of the legal system in safeguarding freedoms and promoting justice for all.
This year’s national Law Day theme, set by the American Bar Association, is “The Rule of Law and the American Dream.” The theme invites the community to reflect on how our legal system protects individual rights and supports opportunity in American society. As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, the Superior Court of San Benito County continues its tradition of engaging local students in meaningful civic dialogue.
The contest offers students a rewarding opportunity to share their unique perspectives on the role of law in shaping the American experience. High school students (Grades 9–12) and Gavilan College students are invited to participate in the annual Law Day Essay Contest by submitting an essay on this year’s theme. Eligible essays must be between 250 to 500 words in length and must be the student’s own original work. Essays constructed using artificial intelligence tools will not be considered.
Essays may be submitted by email to resourceteam@sanbenitocourt.org or delivered to the courthouse during regular business hours. The deadline to apply is April 24, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.
