A public-private partnership in San Juan Bautista is using art as a vehicle to help students stay on the road to literacy.
Crēdo Studio and the Carl M. Luck Library are teaming up to host the Artists-Writers Summer Workshop, a three-week program based on, “Picture Writing: Fostering Literacy Through Art”—a curriculum that “utilizes simple crayon resist art techniques and quality literature in a progression of mini lessons that teach essential literacy skills to students with diverse learning styles,” according to the workshop’s flyer.
Open to 24 students, ages 7 to 12, the summer program, subsidized by the City of the San Juan, begins on Monday, June 12 and runs through Friday, June 30.
The registration fee is $75. There are a limited number of scholarships available.
Crēdo’s owner, Ramona Hill, stated in a telephone interview with BenitoLink that she and her staff will facilitate the workshop sessions. They will be assisted by Anzar High School students, completing their community-service hours.
Hill explained that each workshop day begins at 9 a.m. at Crēdo, where participants will create paintings to accompany their future picture-books.
After the artwork session, students will enter the studio’s dance space, participating in a variety of theater games that serve as “confidence-builders,” said Hill.
Attendees will then walk to the San Juan library, where they will take a respite before crafting their poems or stories until 12:30 p.m.
Students are scheduled to present their hand-bound works on the workshop’s final day.
