Marking the 250th anniversary of our nation, the Fourth of July Kiddie Parade was held starting in front of City Hall on Independence Day morning.

San Benito County Historical Society president John Wrobel, who has helped with the parade for five years, estimated that about 200 children attended.

“I had a lot of fun watching the kids with their bicycles and costumes,” Wrobel said. “Pretty red, white, and blue colors and their shiny stars. I am enjoying this opportunity to share this great day with them on the 250th anniversary.”

Ruth Erickson, who has helped lead the annual parade for more than 20 years, said she enjoyed seeing the children in their “Fourth of July fineries.”

“It was all beautiful,” Erickson said. “And some of the bicycle spokes had red, white and blue all through them.”

She said she hopes the young people will have an idea of what the holiday is all about and have a positive thought about it.

“It means a lot, especially to me,” she said. “I’m an immigrant myself; I came here 50 years ago, and I’m probably more patriotic than a lot of Americans who were born here.”

A young Hollister resident, Matteo Madera, said he was excited about riding this bike in the parade.

Matteo’s father, Claro Madera, said he brought his son to the parade to show him what the 4th of July means to the two of them and to let them ride their bikes, have fun and see more people in the community.

“We were told by our mother-in-law, Sylvia deLuna, about the parade,” Madera said. “We were excited and wanted to be part of the community as well. I love how everybody gets together to celebrate being happy and free, and seeing the excitement in the kids’ eyes.”
