More than 400 middle and high school students in San Juan Bautista participated in the third annual Aromas San Juan Unified School District College and Career Expo on Sept. 24. The two-hour gathering was held at Anzar High School gymnasium.
Two groups of students had the opportunity to speak to more than 30 organizations from various industries about the roles and responsibilities of their employees.
Students who spoke with BenitoLink said they were interested in exploring careers in healthcare, education, armed forces and business. Others said they didn’t have plans and were exploring their options.
Anzar High junior Mia Schobert, 16, said though she was thinking of joining the Navy after high school, she enjoyed speaking to different industry representatives.
“I learned how to get my foot into a lot of different fields, which is very helpful,” she said.
While one student asked BenitoLink about the education pathway to become a journalist, another was interested in learning the process to produce a story.
Industries participating in the expo included architecture, education, public safety, marketing, construction and arts.
Aromas San Juan Unified School District Curriculum and Instruction Director Jivan Dhaliwal said students prepared for the expo by outlining their career interests with the participating organizations.
“Our goal is to give students an opportunity to ask questions, make connections, discover careers they may never have considered, and begin imagining what their future could look like,” Dhaliwal said.
She added that the district is building a career and college readiness system that needs the expertise of industry and post-secondary education partners.
“We want to ensure all students experience work-based learning opportunities to build awareness and explore career interests during their education at ASJUSD,” she said.
In addition to candy, stickers and other items the organizations handed out, the students swarmed the Army table to show off their strength on the pull-up bar.
When the first batch of students cleared the gymnasium, a friendly pull-up competition between representatives of San Benito County Sheriff’s Office and CalFire broke out.
One firefighter even took it a step further by doing the pull-ups with an oxygen tank on his back.
