A Hollister man whose body was found on Pacheco Pass on July 9 died of a gunshot wound to the neck, according to the Merced County Coroner’s office.

The official, who declined to provide his name, said he could not provide additional information about the autopsy or the homicide case and referred BenitoLink to law enforcement for additional information regarding the case.

Javier Becerril Jr., 42, was found in the trunk of a white Tesla near the border of San Benito and Merced counties on Hwy 152.

The California Highway Patrol said it is treating the investigation as a homicide.

Becerril worked as a DoorDash driver in Hollister and was reported missing by his family. Authorities were notified of a potential missing person on the highway east of Lower Cottonwood Route, where his body was discovered.

CHP Central Division officials have not responded to questions regarding the status of the investigation.

A memorial was set up for Becerril in front of Safeway in Hollister shortly after his body was discovered.

A GoFundMe fundraising account was created by his family to cover his funeral and memorial expenses, according to the website.

BenitoLink reported on July 17 the account had raised $17,000 for the family. The account no longer exists.
