Entering this season, the San Benito cross country team was introduced to entirely new leadership. Two teachers, Chris Thompson and Leanna Morgan, along with former Baler athlete Ryan Shorey, took up the task of leading the team for the 2014 season. Each has experience in running and coaching, though unique in their own ways.
Head coach Thompson considers himself a “casual runner” who enjoys competing in fun runs and obstacle races. However, his coaching expertise has roots in baseball, in which he has many years of experience. In terms of his leadership style, Thompson prides himself in “knowing how to motivate.”
Morgan is a recreational runner, in addition to being an active cross country parent for the past four years. Yet, she is most notably known for her role as a physical education teacher.
“I’m focused on health and fitness,” said Morgan.
With the most competitive running background, Shorey is a former sprinter for the Baler track team who went on to compete at the college level for the University of Redlands for four years. Last year, Shorey began coaching for track as the head girls’ sprinting coach. As for cross country, he said he plans to help the team by providing education on the sport, which he learns by researching extensively outside of practice.
Taking the job may come with extra pressure, given that the team had three consecutive league titles under its belt, but the new coaches didn’t miss a beat, helping both the boys’ and the girls’ teams to league titles this season. After being approached about the job by Athletic Director Tod Thatcher, Thompson said, “I was interested in a challenge and wanted to add a new skill set.” In order to be a successful head coach, he said that he must, “Be prepared to have clarity and consistency with runners.”
As for Morgan, she said, “I’ve always wanted to be a part of coaching cross country,” and that she enjoys being with students. Being the only female coach, Morgan feels that her responsibilities are to, “Bring a different aspect as a mom, but not go easy on the girls.” After coaching track last year, Shorey said that going on to coach cross country, “Felt like the next natural progression.”
All of the coaches agreed that success is a group effort.
“It will take every team member to challenge themselves,” said Morgan.
Shorey added, “We’re going to have to step up in order to do the best.” With this in mind, the coaches have high expectations for the team’s development.
Thompson said he hoped that the trio’s leadership could help the athletes “to push their bodies to the limit with mental strength,” as well as, “help them find that balance between mental and physical strength.”
Shorey said he believes that with the right guidance, the team could, “get a couple of people to the state championships this year.” The boys’ and girls’ teams will compete in the Central Coast Section meet on Saturday, Nov. 20.
As a whole, the coaches are focused on their team motto, “To get better.” As for their team unity, Thompson said, “I think the coaches and I have been working well together,” and with pride added, “I think these kids are awesome.”
