San Benito High School has had several ways of publicizing its news to students over the years, but this year a few students are trying something new. They are using YouTube videos: the General Youth News Enterprise, created and anchored by seniors Robbie Kelly and Tyler Schiller along with classmates Mitchell Kret, Niko Veltri, and DJ Casas. The production has gotten a number of views.
Kelly and Schiller started the General Youth News Enterprise based on Schiller’s idea. “The whole General Youth News Enterprise came about when Tyler asked me to do student news with him,” Kelly said. Their first broadcast debuted on Oct. 5 and has gotten several positive reviews due to its originality and humor. Since then, their channel has received more than 2,000 views on YouTube.
When asked about the origin of their idea, Schiller stated that “It all started with us in Rob Campbell’s Teledramatic Arts class. We just got our hands on some cameras, and we made a Rally Club video… and that just set it off.”
When asked about the group, Campbell said, “They’re creative, independent, self-driven, motivated and intense.”
The production has had some strong competition such as Strive TV, another local media newscast.
“We’ve actually changed our opinion on Strive TV because we just didn’t want to start an unnecessary conflict,” stated Schiller.
When asked about what makes the news enterprise stand out from other broadcasts, Kelly stated that they “add humor to our broadcast, not just humor that everyone else expects.”
In addition to having good chemistry on camera, the five young men also have great connection off camera as well.
“It’s not even work when we do it, it’s like we’re having fun,” stated Veltri.
“It’s really easy to collaborate ideas since we’re really close friends, it doesn’t feel like a job,” said Casas.
“We plan to keep the news going throughout the year, write more sketches, and to have more anchors for next year as well,” said Kelly. There is no doubt that this is just the beginning of what the General Youth News Enterprise has to show the community.
