The San Francisco Chroncle announced the 100 Top 2014 Wines in a special section Dec. 7, and Josh Jensen’s 2012 Calera Central Coast Pinot Noir made the no. 5 spot.
“Deep, musky and showing a ripe barrage of fruit, yet with all of Calera’s classic power and strut,” wrote Chronicle Wine Editor Jon Bonne.
Pinot Noir has become very popular over the past 10 years and it is now being produced in higher quantity. Bonne explained in the article what makes these vintners different, “Luckily, there are winemakers who have not been seduced by the easy road, and whose examples reveal the mysteries of site and soil, as great Pinot Noir always has.”
Jensen learned from the established wine industry in the Burgundy region of France. After thorough research, Jensen found that San Benito County matched his ideal for soil and climate conditions. A short version of Jensen’s determined and unique story is posted on the Calera website,” Site selection was vital as he ventured off the grid to plant on the site of an old limekiln in the Gavilan Mountains of California.”
Calera Central Coast Pinot Noir is also the lowest-priced Pinot in the list of 23 named Pinots.
