The re-striping of San Benito Street to one lane in each direction began in earnest this week, with crews working to remove existing lines and creating left turn lanes at each intersection.

The work has been long-planned, as the city of Hollister awaited the transfer of control of the road from the state back to the city — a result of the construction of the Highway 25 bypass east of downtown.

Parking along San Benito Street will remain in a parallel configuration.

In a post on Facebook this week, Mayor Ignacio Velazquez encouraged residents to “Please slow down and be careful driving through downtown. If you are in a hurry, please use the bypass as a better option. We understand the new layout will take time to get used to, but this is the first phase of revitalizing our downtown by becoming more pedestrian-friendly.”
