Again this year, several elementary and one middle school student from rural schools in San Benito County were winners in a Monterey Bay Air Resources District-sponsored calendar art contest. Artwork by Southside School seventh-grader Brandon So will appear on the cover of the 2017 calendar.
Each year, in celebration of Clean Air Month (May), the district sponsors a calendar art contest for school-aged children in Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito counties. This year’s calendar theme was “Show How You Care About Our Air.”
On May 18, the district board of directors, which includes San Benito County Supervisor Jerry Muenzer and San Juan Bautista City Councilman Robert Lund, recognized the 13 contest winners at its monthly meeting.  This year’s contest included participation by more than 600 students in first through eighth grades in all three counties. In addition to having their artwork published in the 2017 calendar, each winner received a cash award of $100.
The San Benito County calendar contest winners are represented by the following schools:
- Brandon So  — Southside School, seventh grade: front cover winner
- Gabe Herbst — Southside School, fifth grade
- Rene Theresin — Southside School, third grade
- Nikole Stephens — Tres Pinos School, second grade
