Do you want to live to 100? Sanjay Gupta, of CNN, says that the world is being overwhelmed with technology. Studies show that using a digital device before you go to sleep turns your brain to zero.
Gupta suggests that people who are distracted by their phone or other electronics before or during sleep should walk around until they are truly ready to go to bed. He says it could help improve health and sleep cycles.
Many students at San Benito High School say that they use their cell phones before and after bedtime. Most say they use their phone for their academics; most of the time it’s used for Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and other social apps.
Are there exceptions? Anthony Smith, an automobile mechanic in Watsonville, says that he uses technology all the time, but it’s for his job. He stays up almost every night typing away at his computer and making phone calls. However, Smith suggests that too many people are “Facebookin’” and not going outside and enjoying their life in a healthy way.
Maria Jimenez, a Pre-K teacher at the Catholic preschool in Watsonville, says, “Technology is becoming more and more of a problem all the way down to 3-and 4-year-olds. When a 3-year-old goes on Facebook and doesn’t want to go outside, we the have beginnings of a zombie apocalypse.”
Jimenez also points out that her grandparents lived until their late 90s with little use of technology. This gives proof to Gupta’s assertion that lower use of digital devices, particularly at bedtime, can help you live to 100.
