Walking around the campus of San Benito High School, some sports teams can be easy to spot, depending on what day it is. This is because some teams wear their uniforms to school on game days. The most common to do this are the football team and the cheerleaders.
For some sports, the reason they don’t wear their uniforms on their game days is because their uniforms aren’t school-appropriate, such as the water polo teams. Varsity girls’ coach Ronni Gautschi says that all sports should wear their uniforms and gear around school. Varsity team captain Erin Hepner said, “When you all look the same…it makes it look more professional. I think it’s important for teams to look uniform like a team.”
Boys’ water polo coach Brenden Sigourney said wearing uniforms on game day is a good way to show what you love, and a great way to start a conversation. This is why the girls’ water polo team has ordered sweatpants to wear instead of their uniforms on game days. The boys have shirts to wear for representation already, but Sigourney wants to get team polos next year.
Ishmael Medina, one of the four captains of the junior varsity football team, said players should wear their uniforms to school. He said it “shows school spirit and pride for their team and the honor of showing what they represent.”
For football, boys wear their jerseys to school on game days. “I love wearing my jersey to school,” said Medina. Cheerleaders also wear their uniforms on game days and teams such as baseball and softball often wear jerseys as well. In recent years, basketball players have worn ties on game days.
