UC Master Gardeners Annual Garden Tour

UC Master Gardeners Annual Garden Tour

Annual Garden tour featuring 8 wildlife friendly and waterwise gardens.
09/09/2017
Website:
www.mgmb.ucanr.edu

UC Master Gardeners know a great garden when they see one. So each year, they raise funds for their educational programs by presenting a tour of outstanding gardens somewhere in the Monterey Bay area. This year the UC Master Gardener tour will be held in Santa Cruz, on Saturday, September 9, 2017, and will highlight eight unique gardens that are "waterwise and wildlife friendly."

All within an easy day's drive in the City of Santa Cruz, these gardens will demonstrate how any gardener can reduce their water use while still creating spectacular, healthy, and useable spaces for their families. You will see Mediterranean and native plants, water saving gardening techniques, and habitats that provide safe havens for the pollinators we need and small mammals that share our suburban spaces.

Besides the gardens, you won't want to miss the Garden Tour Headquarters at the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History to enjoy:

a plant sale, with more than 500 plants propagated by UC Master Gardeners, and

free presentations on gardening "waterwise and wildlife friendly" including:

"Bringing Nature Back to Tyrrell Park" by Nancy Lenz

Learn how a handful of neighbors teamed up with the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History and city's Parks and Recreation Department to transform a creekside jungle of invasives into a pollinator and California native plant haven.

"Creating Wildlife Friendly Garden" by Tai Moses

Local author, Tai Moses, is at the vanguard of the movement to protect native wildlife in our communities and has lots of recommendations for making your garden a safe habitat for our wild neighbors.

Tickets are $25 in advance ($30, the day of the tour) and are available on the UC Master Gardeners website - www.mgmb.ucanr.edu - or at participating nurseries listed on the website.

About UC Master Gardeners of Monterey Bay:

UC Master Gardeners of Monterey Bay is a volunteer organization affiliated with UC Cooperative Extension's Master Gardener Program. Our mission is:

President Barack Obama signed the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) into law on July 22, 2014. The WIOA supersedes the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) and amends the Wagner-Peyser Act, the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act, and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

As with the preceding WIA, the WIOA helps job seekers succeed in the labor market by providing access to employment, education, training, and support services while matching employers with the skilled workers they need to compete in the global economy. In addition, the enactment of WIOA provides a new opportunity to ensure that America’s Job Center of CaliforniaSM (AJCC) locations remain effective and job-driven—responding to the needs of employers and preparing workers for jobs, now and in the future.

Yoga classes at the San Benito County Historical Park, on the second Tuesday evening of the month, has been very successful!  Those coming without experience in Yoga have been pleasantly surprised to find themselves easily fitting into the lesson taught by Robin Pollard during the hour long session.  Robin focuses on limbering and movement exercises coordinated with the 'breath'.  Often during the day, when concentrating on what we're doing, we even forget to breathe fully, and that increases our tension and anxiety.  Yoga, as Robin teaches, brings a mindfulness to your breathing that becomes habit.  If one learned this alone, the classes would be so worth the effort getting there.

The Yoga classes that Robin is teaching are sponsored by R.E.A.C.H. San Benito Parks Foundation and the San Benito County Historical Society at the 'Dance Hall' in San Benito County Historical Park.  At first the inspiration was to celebrate the full moon in April, but the inspiration blossomed into an all-Summer affair.  Getting out to the Historical Park is essential for every county resident to get on their calendar, and then to add the joy of learning a bit of something new, like Yoga, is a total bonus.  It is seldom you will find the chance to get acquainted with this exercise and meditative practice in such an inviting atmosphere, for a donation only!  What a winner!  On a warm summer evening, second Tuesday of the month through the Summer, COME ON OUT!!!  Not ever to be regretted.

The San Benito Fire Safe Council serves private landowners by assisting them to reduce their risk during wildfires. The SBFSC is open to all members of the public and is a collaboration between the private sector and fire agencies. The SBFSC secures grants that facilitate the reduction in fuels, thereby increasing safety in the highest risk fire areas. In spring 2017, SBFSC is wrapping up a 2-year, $117,000 grant that extended a shaded fuel break in San Juan Canyon by 2.5 miles and provided multiple free chipping services to the residents of San Juan Canyon.
