Local Food Economy Discussion

Local Food Economy Discussion

Join us for a discussion about how we can strengthen our local food economy and connect people of all ages to the bounty of San Benito's agriculture.
03/05/2017
Event Time(s):
4:00 to 6:00 pm
Website:
https://www.facebook.com/sanbenitobounty/

Farmers, ranchers, food business owners, educators, artists, and interested community members are invited to join us on Sunday, March 5th from 4:00 - 6:00 pm at the FarmHouse Cafe, for a discussion about how we can strengthen our local food economy and connect people of all ages to the bounty of San Benito County agriculture.

This gathering was inspired by a December presentation at Paicines Ranch where Martin Ping of the Hawthorne Valley Association shared how their agricultural community built a thriving Food Hub serving the New York City Metropolitan area (more info here: https://benitolink.com/growing-connection-land).  Many of those who attended voiced the desire to continue a conversation about building a more vibrant community food hub right here in San Benito County.  We welcome your participation and input. Please share this invitation with anyone else you think is willing to roll up their sleeves and dive into this exciting topic.

Please RSVP to sanbenitobountyca@slowfoodusa.org.  Beverages will be available for sale, but the Cafe will be closed for food service.

We look forward to seeing you at this gathering to promote the Bounty of our County!

safeTALK is a half-day alertness training that prepares anyone over the age of 15, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. safeTALK-trained helpers can recognize these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources, such as caregivers trained in ASIST.  This is a wonderful training opportunity for community service providers and first responders in San Benito County.

President Barack Obama signed the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) into law on July 22, 2014. The WIOA supersedes the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) and amends the Wagner-Peyser Act, the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act, and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

As with the preceding WIA, the WIOA helps job seekers succeed in the labor market by providing access to employment, education, training, and support services while matching employers with the skilled workers they need to compete in the global economy. In addition, the enactment of WIOA provides a new opportunity to ensure that America’s Job Center of CaliforniaSM (AJCC) locations remain effective and job-driven—responding to the needs of employers and preparing workers for jobs, now and in the future.

Interested community members, business owners, and elected officials are invited to join the Pinnacles Gateway Partners for their next meeting in Hollister on Thursday, March 16th.

The mission of the Pinnacles Gateway Partners is to communicate and work together to protect resources, to inspire visitors, and to foster economic prosperity and community enrichment for the long-term stewardship of Pinnacles National Park and its gateway communities. One of the group's goals is to capitalize on the strategic location of gateway communities as entry points to Pinnacles National Park for the economic benefit of these communities.

The group meets every other month, and rotates meeting location among the gateway communities, including Hollister, King City, San Juan Bautista, Soledad, Greenfield, and Salinas.

The program will include coffee and networking, updates from Pinnacles National Park, and a regional marketing presentation/discussion with a team from the Monterey Visitors and Convention Bureau.

A 3-hour parking limit is enforced on the streets near City Hall. There is no time limit at the municipal public parking lots near City Hall and the Briggs Building parking structure (accessed from the 300 block of Fifth Street).
