Women’s History Month offers an opportunity to reflect not only on the well-known figures who shaped history, but also on the countless women whose everyday acts of solidarity strengthened their communities. Long before formalized insurance systems or social safety nets existed, women—particularly those in marginalized communities—built networks of support that helped families weather life’s uncertainties.
Imagine a time before policies, premiums, and claims. When illness struck or tragedy occurred, many families had nowhere to turn. In that landscape of uncertainty, women created their own safety nets through mutual aid—systems built on trust, reciprocity, and shared responsibility.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Black women in cities like Philadelphia formed benevolent associations that supported widows, orphans, and families during times of sickness or loss. These organizations were not traditional charities but mutual aid societies where members contributed what they could and received help when they needed it, while also creating spaces for solidarity, learning, and collective resilience in the face of systemic barriers. During the Civil War, this same spirit of community care spread across the country through Ladies’ Aid societies, where women organized supplies, sewed quilts, assembled medical materials, and ensured that soldiers and their families were supported at home, effectively becoming the first “insurers” of their communities—not through contracts or calculations, but through a shared commitment to care for one another.
At the heart of these efforts was a simple but powerful belief: the wellbeing of one woman is connected to the wellbeing of the whole community. When one woman succeeds, she helps lift others with her. When one encounters hardship, the community steps forward with tangible support—whether that means groceries, childcare, or financial help—to ensure she can move forward.
This philosophy of mutual aid has strengthened communities for generations. Here in San Benito County, that tradition continues. More than a decade ago, recognizing that women and girls still face unique challenges and opportunities, the Community Foundation for San Benito County established the Women’s Fund.
While the methods have evolved to include grants and organized programs, the core principle remains the same: we are stronger together. The Women’s Fund represents a collaborative investment in the potential of women and girls across our county.
Supporting women strengthens entire communities. When we invest in a single mother’s education, we help strengthen her family and contribute to a stronger local workforce. When we fund programs that provide mental health support for young women, we are helping build a healthier and more resilient future for everyone.
By honoring the historical legacy of women’s mutual aid and continuing that work through the Women’s Fund, we are carrying forward a promise that has shaped communities for generations: that no woman should have to face life’s challenges alone.
This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the women who created networks of care where none existed and recognize the ongoing importance of that legacy today. The Community Foundation for San Benito County invites residents to learn more about the work of the Women’s Fund and how it continues this tradition of mutual support. Because when women and girls thrive, San Benito County grows stronger for everyone.
