If you see more bicyclists on the road this week, it’s for a good reason. During the second week in May, the Council of San Benito County Governments (COG) kicks things into high gear for the 27th annual Bike Week celebration. Communities across the country celebrate Bike Week to give visibility to the importance of safer and improved streets, healthier habits, and less traffic — one community at a time.

On Thursday, May 11, COG will sponsor Bike to School Day festivities in collaboration with the Hollister School District. The event raises awareness of the need to create safer routes for bicycling and walking and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, safety, reducing traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community. For a list of participating schools, visit the Facebook page.

In anticipation of Bike to School Day, COG partnered with the Safe Kids Coalition of San Benito County to conduct free helmet fittings at local schools during the last week in April 2017.

On Thursday, it is anticipated that more than 500 San Benito County students will participate in Bike to School Day. Students will receive a free breakfast snack and bicycle raffle sponsored by COG.

Bike to School events are taking place nationwide throughout the month of May.
