Since last July, County Express has offered out-of-county medical rides to county residents who have no other means of transportation to appointments.
County Express, operated by San Benito County Local Transportation Authority, offers local service to Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. The bus drivers can pick up residents, take them to their medical appointments and wait until the appointment ends to take them home.
To access the ride service, required medical services must be unavailable in San Benito County.
Fees range from $2 to $5 depending on the distance to the appointment location. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance.
Call (831) 636-4161 for information or to schedule a ride.

County Express also offers the Medical Shopping Assistance program, which provides door-to-door service for in-county medical appointments and other services for those who qualify.
Reservations for this service must be made at least 48 hours in advance and the fee is $1.25 one way.

One County Express driver, who asked that her name be withheld, said that while all County Express services are important, āgetting people to their doctor feels good. Sometimes we are all they have.ā
