Portland-based art-rock band Baby Grendel

Baby Grendel, which started out as a recording project for frontman Jonathan Suarez, came together on the Hatch(l)ing EP, recording as a cohesive band, bringing together a dynamic blend of art-rock sounds, creating a milestone in their musical journey. Known for their introspective, genre-blurring sound, Baby Grendel is the brainchild of Jonathan Suarez. With Hatch(l)ing, the band expands on the emotional themes of isolation, growth, and self-acceptance that have been a constant throughout Suarez’s musical evolution.
“I’m not someone who’s had an easy time making friends. The songs I make are sometimes about isolation, and about a cycle that all of us have to go through on our own forever,” comments Suarez. “We do extraordinary things, bending time and space, to try to break through to something new, but it’s always just going to be us and this dizzying cyclic existence. I think it can mean something if we learn how to be honest.
“Hatch(l)ing is also about growth and change. Evolving a solo project into a 5-piece band. Learning to accept the way things unfold without thinking that nature made a mistake. I’m having a hard time with that these days, but it’s the only show in town so it’s where I’ll be.”
The new EP Hatch(l)ing was recorded at Jackpot! Studios in Portland, with renowned producers Larry Crane and Justin Chase at the helm. The EP features four tracks: “Satellite,” “Hatching,” “Morning Prayer,” and “They Will Fall,” each showcasing the band’s evolving sound with rich instrumentation and deeply personal lyrics.
