San Benito County’s coroner’s office has identified the victim of the Oct. 18 Hollister fatal shooting as 49-year-old Juan Vasquez.
Detective Bryan Penny with the San Benito County Sheriff’s Department said Vasquez was a resident of Hollister and died at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, where he was flown from Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital for treatment after reportedly suffering multiple gunshot wounds.
Penny said the cause of death is pending an autopsy.
Hollister Police Chief Carlos Reynoso said authorities are not releasing additional information regarding the investigation. Following the shooting, police told BenitoLink that no arrests were made.
According to an Oct. 19 news release, officers were dispatched around 7:22 p.m. to reports of a shooting involving two vehicles on the 1100 block of Sunnyslope Road between Valley View and Memorial, near Sunnyslope Elementary School.
Vasquez, who was not identified in the news release, drove himself to Hazel Hawkins and was later airlifted to the trauma center in Salinas, according to police.
“Despite emergency medical care, the victim later died from their injuries,” the release said.
Reports indicated a suspect vehicle described as a black Chrysler sedan. Police reportedly shut down several intersections following the shooting, including Sunnyslope and Memorial, Sunnyslope and Clearview, Memorial and Sunset, and Sunset and Hwy 25.
