Hundreds of community members participated in the annual Catholic Passion Walk on Good Friday (April 19), with walkers forming a line that stretched along several city blocks.

The Passion Walk serves as a Catholic commemoration of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, according to Catholic Online.

A priest led a crowd clutching small crosses and rosaries through Monterey Street and Nash Road for the 3.5-mile walk from the Sacred Heart Church to St. Benedict Church. Participants varied in age; some were carted in strollers and the oldest used walking canes.

While some followed in silence, others sang and prayed while making their way through town. Over the course of the walk, some participants carried a six-foot-plus cross in remembrance of Jesus’ walk while carrying his cross.

Volunteers wearing orange safety vests directed walkers through crosswalks and along sidewalks. Stations along the route gave away water.

Socorro Prado and two of her sons, ages five and nine, had a cooler, storage bin and several packs of bottled water ready for the walkers at one of the stations. Prado said this was her family’s third year passing out water and that she felt blessed by giving to others.

“Qué tanto me puede costar unas aguas?” Prado said. (How much can some water cost me?)
